practical Field days

If you want to come and try, and get hands-on experience in a hive, our field days are the way to go. All welcome!

Come and join us for an afternoon at the BSSA apiary in Clovelly Park, and be guided though the process of doing a hive inspection by BSSA society experts in a friendly relaxed environment.

We're happy to provide a beekeeping veil if you don't already have one.

There will be no hive field days if the forecast temperature is below 17 degrees or over 30 degrees,  and not if raining, according to the prior day's news weather report at 7pm.

Practical hands-on beekeeping experience guided by club experts. An excellent way to gain experience in hive inspections and gain knowledge at the BSSA apiary.

This event will feature reduce hives to single brood box for winter.

All are welcome, but non-members are only allowed to attend two sessions before they must join the BSSA.

All participants must have at least long sleeves, long-leg trousers (preferably light-coloured), closed shoes and a head veil. We strongly recommend you bring your own bee suit and gloves (Ansell rubber gloves are acceptable) as the BSSA have a limited supply of veils and sizes at each session.

Spaces are limited, and online registrations are necessary. If you require more information about the field day, contact Bob Beer on 0413 208 835.

Cost: Register and pay online - $10 for Members, $20 for Non-Members.

The BSSA apiary is located on Selgar Ave in Clovelly Park. Click for a Google map. Due to roadworks, Bob has provided directions to access Selgar Ave as follows:

Exit off South Road at Tonsley Boulevard and into MAB Circuit. The first turn right will bring you into Selgar Ave.

Please allow plenty of travel time to ensure an on time arrival.

IMPORTANT: The field day will not proceed (according to the previous night's forecast) if:

    • the forecast temperature is below 17 or over 30 degrees
    • if it is raining

However we now have secured an onsite area that enables us to work out of the rain on related topics without the bees.
